Sheesh! The place looks so empty. My dad retired from Preston School in 1990. He was a counselor there for 24 years. I had an opportunity to work there too, but opted for a civilian job with the Dept of the Air Force instead.

Preston school of industry stories. (Last Updated On: January 5, 2020) Perched on a hill overlooking the town of Ione, Ca, is an ominous presence that screams horror film and haunted encounters. Known as the Preston Castle, this menacing structures eerie appearance takes on a whole new level of frightening charm after one learns of its ghostly past. What had started out as a reform school for wards of the state in the early 1890s, developed into one of the regions most mysteriously tragic entities with reported ghost sightings, tales of unspeakable brutalities, a living history and at least one unsolved murder. Preston Castles Tragic History In the 66 years of the original Preston School of Industry, there were hundreds of escape attempts, numerous violent encounters, abhorred testimonies of sexual abuse, inhumane punishments and murder. Perhaps, no murder is more infamous than the “unsolved” brutal murder of Anna Corbin. Anna was the head housekeeper at Preston. On Thursday, February 23, 1950, Anna was brutally beaten to death and discovered shortly before a staff meeting. Historical accounts of where the body was found differ between sources. Some state she was found in a locked basement closet, some say near the kitchen and some say a supply room. One thing is clear, she was found in the basement around 2pm bludgeoned to death with a rope around her neck. The list of suspects was initially a long one. It was filled with both wards and staff. Eventually a ward named Eugene Monroe became the main suspect. Unfortunately, he was never found guilty of this crime. His first two trials were hung trials and he was acquitted in the third trial. Monroe was also a suspect in two other murders outside of Preston. Within a few years of Corbins murder, Monroe was incarcerated for murder in Oklahoma. In addition to Mrs. Corbins brutal death, there have been many suspicious reports of wards dying due to severe illnesses like tuberculosis. Unfortunately, there are also tales of wards being killed by guards and other wards like Sam Goins and Herman Huber. These tales are often debated by researchers, family members of former wards, protestors of Prestons existence and those who support the schools restoration. Despite the uncertainty of the details surrounding the deaths of the wards, theres a nearby cemetery filled with graves of wards who were “rehabilitated” at Preston. Check out my partial list of the Famous and Infamous wards of Preston School of Industry Preston Castles Haunted Past Nowadays, many Paranormal enthusiasts and professional ghost hunters claim that the Preston Castle is haunted. In other terms, there are spiritual “visitors” that reside in the castle. Anna Corbins spirit is often reported as one of the main spirits that “visits” the castle. Other reports claim that spirits of the wards who were killed while at Preston, or who died of health issues, also “visit” the castle. Additionally, theres an annual Paracon held at Preston that draws ghost hunters, paranormal enthusiasts from far and wide to be a part of this supernatural experience. Abandoned Preston Castle School of Industry The schools castle structure was closed in 1960 after a more modern facility was built nearby. The castle building itself sat for roughly 40 years, unused, not cared for, and just withering away with time. Tales of the brutalities and murders began to fade into the archives as the town put behind them the most notable Preston tragedies. But, the wards who continued serving their time at the newer Preston facilities, quickly learned about the old castles tales. This “history lesson” served as a deterrence to many wards and flirted with becoming urban legends among the region. The following is a video clip of restoration work being done on the castle in 1988: In 2001, the Preston Castle Foundation, in effort to preserve the castle, received a 50+ year lease of the building. In November of 2014, the foundation received ownership of the property. My encounter with the foundation and its docents was pleasant and very informative. Their efforts to preserve and restore the building goes beyond the glorification of death and brutality. In my opinion, their efforts center on returning the castle to its role as a community partner like it used to be. Back in the early 20th century, the Preston Schools infirmary was used by locals who needed medical assistance. Additionally, the schools band played in local establishments and the sports teams brought some positive encouragement to the community. Preston Castle Tours Today, the Preston Castle Foundation offers tours to the public. These tours focus on the schools positive history, touching on some of the paranormal and doesnt shy away from some of the tragedies. The following video clip was once used at the beginning of public tours of Preston: My Tour of Preston Castle When entering the town of Ione, the castles Romanesque Revival architecture kicks you in the gut and steals your breath. In fact, I never seemed to fully catch my breath until I left the town of Ione. Turning onto Waterman Road seemed like I was entering a ghost town. It reminded me of my trip to the ghost town of North Bloomfield. All of the buildings were empty and lifeless. The road slowly takes you up to the Preston Castle gates, where I arrived about 35 minutes before the tour began. So, I decided to park by the gate and walk back down the street to visit the “modern” section of the Preston School of Industry. A Warning Sign As I stepped onto the grounds of the Colonial house for the first pictures of the day, a large vulture landed on top of the home almost directly above me. I could hear the wings flapping prior to its landing. Once on the roof, it let out an ungodly screech that sent chills up my spine. It was as if the scavenger of death was warning me of things to come. Either that, or it was putting a claim on my carcass. This was the largest bird I have ever seen in person. In fact its 5 foot wingspan made it look more like a medieval creature. I quickly recognized the vultures red face and black body. I hurried out into the grass to take a picture of this winged creature. It was an eerie experience and one that weighed on me as I prepared for my four hour tour of the haunted castle. Vulture on top of the Colonial Hou se The Castles Exterior If the castles appearance doesnt make you slightly apprehensive to enter, its massive size, which at times can block out the sun, will. Approaching the steps to the main entrance, my senses went into overdrive. Its like I could hear sounds more clearly, smell things more clearly and feel every breeze no matter how gentle it may be. Being on a Photography Tour allowed me the ability to freely roam the grounds. I wasnt confined to a designed tour of the castle. So, I took advantage of this freedom, and chose to explore the exterior first. Its not a quick journey by any means to walk around the exterior. In fact, this truly puts the castles size into proper perspective. One thing I noticed right away, the hopeless views from the windows. It was if the glass was especially created to strip the hope from each ward. They were dark and gloomy like a storm filled sky. The stairways into the various entrances seemed worn from usage. The bricks, which were built in San Quentin and Folsom Prisons, gave the building a lifeless, reddish outer shell. Initially, Preston School of Industry wanted to provide a “home” feel to the wards and not a prison like feel. Unfortunately, at no time during my lap around the building, did I see anything that would make me think, feel or imagine a “home” type feel to this place. In fact, it was the exact opposite. I felt despair, hopelessness and a drain on the soul. Inside the Preston Castle Entering the Preston Castle was more than just an excitingly, creepy exploration. It was a reminder of my past. Growing up, as a troubled youth and made many stupid decisions as a teenager. Truth be told, I could have easily ended up in a juvenile detention center due to all of the criminal activities that I committed. Theres an old adage that says “boys will be boys. ” Well, I would like to add a footnote to that adage and say “sometimes boys will be wards. ” If I spent my teenage years in California during the heyday of this castle, I could have easily been sent to Preston. I was so lucky not to get caught for any of the foolish crimes I committed when lost in my anger filled, misguided teenage years. It wasnt hard for me to put myself in the shoes of these wards and imagine the hard, brutal life at Preston. However, it also made me count my blessings that I never ended up in a place like this. The Basement of Preston Castle After making a lap around the building, I decided to head back to the courtyard and enter the castle through the basement into the activity room. Right away, you will notice that the inside of the building is like a maze, spanning both vertically and horizontally. Its really hard to decide which direction to go. My plan of attack was to spend one hour on each floor. The 4th floor wasnt open due to safety issues. The floor plan was rather strange as the shower room was positioned directly behind the activity room with not much privacy. Perhaps, the most intriguing part of the activity room is the antique looking piano hiding in the corner. After tickling the ivory for a few moments, I proceeded down the grim looking hallway. I walked straight into a large room, bypassing stairs up to the first floor and a hallway leading toward the kitchen. Check out my Photo Essay: Spooky Hallways and More This large room had some school desks to the left and barrels to the right. There was a room to the left of the desks and a room to the right of the barrels. It was down here where Anna Corbins body was found. After a few moments, I went over to the kitchen and the pantry. The old stove made for some wonderful pictures, as did the pantry. Across from the kitchen, was the plunge bath. This was where the new wards were forced to swim in a tub of lye. It looked like an indoor pool but sounded more like an early form of water torture. Unfortunately, there was no open entrance into this room so I proceeded upstairs to the first floor. Check out my Photo Essay: Kitchen and Dining for more photos of the Preston Castle Kitchen and Pantry First Floor This was probably the busiest floor in the entire building. Not only were there numerous photographers, but there were also several photo shoots taking place. Of particular interest on this floor was the dining room, infirmary, the prayer room, the main office and the small museum. This is where the outdoor front steps bring you into the building. Its often where most people begin their tours. When arriving onto the first floor from the basement, its difficult to decide which direction to head. My path of exploration was influenced by the amount of people in the dining area which is in the right wing of the castle if you are looking at the building from the outside. I decided to head to the left and ended up at the doctors office and then the infirmary. The doctors office had a strange feel to it. But, the infirmary was even more inspirational to ones depraved imagination. There are several beds in the infirmary which prompt thoughts of the various deadly diseases that ravaged this country during the early 20th century. I had to save this room for last as there were two photo shoots and about a dozen photographers in here throughout the tour. But, this room is well worth the effort. In fact, its one of the most impressive rooms in the entire castle. Theres a nice fireplace, a staircase heading down to the basement and a large dining table from 1930. Check out my Photo Essay: Kitchen and Dining for more photos of the Dining Room The main entrance into the building is where the administration room is located, a large room with historical displays and the cool, old-fashioned vault. Additionally, theres what I call a “prayer room” located right off the display room. I would suggest that people start here first, say a few prayers and then begin the tour. Because, who knows what one might encounter. Second Floor Theres a few stair cases that lead up to the second floor. This floor mainly housed most of the staff apartments and a creepy dormitory for the boys. Its also said that Anna Corbins apartment was on this floor. However, there are conflicting reports that say she lived off site, which I tend to agree with. Regardless, all of the apartments were deteriorated and uniquely spooky. But, it was the dormitory that creeped me out the most. This was a large room that is often the source of horrific stories about abuse and neglect. The ceiling is a dark wood that looked to be a perfect spot for bats or other creatures of the night. One cant help but feel some sort of depressing atmosphere while in this room. Also on this floor was the library. This room was stripped of most of its identity. The 4 large windows provided plenty of lighting. There was a closed room connected to the right side of the library. It had beautiful large wooden doors that may have been made out of mahogany. Some believe there was a former classroom on the other side. For more spooky rooms check out my Photo Essay: Preston Castles Creepy Rooms Third Floor For a while, the third floor was closed off to the public due to safety reasons. However, on my tour, the third floor was mostly open. This floor was filled with apartments but had more of an isolated despair than the rest of the building. It was eerily silent as if its history was forgotten. Part of the third floor was closed off due to safety issues. One of the rooms provided a view through the rotted floor down to the basement. In fact many of the rooms suffered badly from deterioration. You could also see up to the fourth floor which was closed off. All of this decay and lifelessness added to the overall darkness of this castle. Besides looking up from the third floor through the opening of the ceiling/floor of the fourth floor, the most you could explore was going up the staircase to a locked door. The 4th floor reportedly had more apartments for staff. The Preston Castle In The Media Over the last decade, the Preston Castle has appeared in various TV shows and movies. The following is a partial list of prominent media appearances by The Castle: Preston Castle Movie In 2012, A Haunting At Preston Castle was released to a meager reception. The plot centers around three friends being trapped in The Preston Castle and having to survive horrific, terrifying encounters. Preston Castle Ghost Adventures In 2009, Travel Channels popular show Ghost Adventures visited Ione and brought more mainstream attention to The Preston. The Lowe Files The popular TV and Film Star Rob Lowe brought his show The Lowe Files to Preston in 2017. It first aired in August, 2017, bringing more mainstream attention to this historic landmark. Apparition (2019) Apparition is a modern twist on some of the schools tragic history. Starring Mena Suvari and Kevin Pollak, this horror film was shot in and around the Preston Castle. It was released in movie theaters in December 2019. The film was also co-written and co-produced by local filmmakers. Final Thoughts on The Preston Castle Whether you believe this place is haunted or not, you cant ignore its spooky appearance and ominous aura. Add in the history of this place with its impressive architectural design, and you have what I call a tragic blend of history, mystery and horror. Despite what some may say, I believe the Preston Castle should be preserved and restored. This building is a historical landmark with a notorious history. Theres definitely a disturbing aura to this place that would make even the most staunch anti-ghost individuals pause in their tracks. I highly recommend taking the photography tour for those photography enthusiasts. It allows for more time to freely tour and engage the castle. My next adventure at the Preston Castle will be the overnight ghost tour. I can only imagine what “visitors” and creatures come out to play at night. Head about 15 minutes before making a left onto Jackson Rd. /Highway 16. Drive 11 miles before making a right onto Ione Rd. which is about two miles past Rancho Murieta. Take this road for 6 miles and continue onto Michigan Bar Road. Eventually, this road veers to the left and becomes 104 East. Stay on here for 3 miles and you will see The Preston Castle off in the distance. Look for the signs to the castle and make a left onto Waterman Rd.

But this one is great! It combines today's tech with a classic scary horror story. The plot and action build to a bunch of jump-out-of-your-seat moments that took me by surprise. Great believable cast, including Kevin Pollack, who plays a truly evil sinister role. The fact that it is based on true events, and was filmed at the very haunted building where the story took place, makes it even more creepy. Not sure you want the little kids to see this, at least not at night just before bed. But I'll be watching this again. 7:41 it looks like a mist shooting up in the middle of the screen. weird! the EVP's were awesome.

Merle Haggard The Preston School of Industry has a long list of famous and infamous people who spent time on those grounds. Some of the wards are well known in the entertainment industry, while others through their criminal history. Here's a few of those famous and infamous guys! THE OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE AT PRESTON Did you know that famous Country Music star, Merle Haggard did time at Preston (PSI) for auto theft back in 1954? In fact, he escaped from the Preston School of Industry less than two months after arriving (January '54) when he and fellow ward, Raymond Branch took off from the dairy ranch on the Preston Farm grounds. The two were later apprehended in Yolo County. Allen Smiley WHAT DOES BUGSY SIEGEL AND THE PRESTON SCHOOL OF INDUSTRY HAVE IN COMMON? Allen Smiley, Bugsy Siegel's right-hand man and eye witness to Bugsy's infamous murder, was actually once a ward at the Preston School of Industry. In fact, he was sent there in September of 1926 on burglary charges. Bet you didn't know that! Rory Calhoun FROM PRESTON TO HOLLYWOOD! Birth Name: Francis Timothy McCown Born: August 8, 1922 Died: April 28, 1999 Would you believe that long before Mr. Calhoun got his break from none other than fellow actor Alan Ladd, Rory Calhoun had been a ward and escapee of the notorious Preston School of Industry in Ione, California? That's right! He had been arrested for stealing a revolver and sent up to the Youth Authority program. Not long afterwards, he escaped and robbed several jewelry stores also stealing a he crossed state lines his case turned Federal. He spent 3 years in a Missouri prison and later was transferred to San Quentin until his 21st birthday. Gerald Gallego GERALD ARMOND GALLEGO & HIS TIES TO PRESTON Long before convicted serial killer Gerald Armond Gallego ended up in the State Prison system, he was once a ward at the Preston School of Industry. By the time he was sent to Preston, he already had a criminal file inches thick. Born the son of a cop killer, Gerald Armond Gallego, Sr., who happened to be the first man to die in the gas chamber in Mis sissippi, it seems that the apple didn't fall too far from the tree. In fact, by the age of 6 he had already been arrested on several sex offenses as well as burglary charges. By the age of 12, he was put on probation for burglary charges and later lewd and lascivious acts with a young girl that sent him to a reform school. It wasn't until 1962, when 15 year old Gallego was arrested for armed robbery with his brother that he was finally sent up to the Preston School of Industry where he remained for about one year. Caryl Chessman THE RED LIGHT BANDIT HAD HIS BEGINNINGS AT PRESTON I had the wonderful privilege of speaking to a gentleman named Ed Bearden awhile back. He had come by the shop Daydreams and Nightmares for my book signing. Sadly, the Modesto Bee had erroneously quoted the date of the book signing and he was disappoint ed when he came by and I wasn't there, but he was excited to get my book. Dana at Daydreams & Nightmares was kind enough to get his phone number and I called him the next day. He used to work at Preston many years ago and he spoke of stories he heard back then when he worked there. One of the stories I hadn't even heard of, so I am going to share it with you (credit belonging to Ed, the gentleman who told me. Long ago, before he was known as the Infamous "Red Light Bandit. Death Row Inmate, Caryl Chessman was sent to Preston as a youth (which he stayed two different times. He was reportedly so bad that they would lock him up in the tower. That is where he carved his name up there, doing solitary confinement. Now of course, I am really interested in learning more about this story so I will be doing my "digging" through the archives to see what I can find about Caryl and his stay at Preston. Sounds like another great story to me. I had never heard of boys being sent up to the tower prior to this, so this is certainly worth looking into for sure.

It was cleaned from top to bottom as well before I was there. That was the explanation on why there was so much dust because of it being knocked loose from all the cleaning. I went there this halloween XD. In 1890, the 230 acre parcel of land where the Preston Castle stands was purchased from the Ione Coal & Iron Company for 30 per acre with 100 acres donated. The land was purchased to house the Preston School of Industry, established by the State Legislature as a progressive action toward rehabilitating, rather than simply imprisoning, juvenile offenders. Construction of the Administration Building for the Preston School of Industry started right away. The bricks for the building were made at San Quentin and Folsom prisons using sandstone that was quarried six miles from Ione. The bricks were then delivered by rail at 6, 000 bricks per car. The cornerstone was laid on December 23, 1890 with 2, 500 people in attendance. The plans for the school were ambitious with the original plans showing 77 rooms on five floors. The administration building, which eventually came to be called the Preston Castle, would be the most significant example of Romanesque Revival architecture in the Mother Lode. The first floor would house a reception and Directors room, general office with a walk in vault, reception room, sitting room, a butler's pantry, a dining room, employee lavatory, physician office, pharmacy, clerks office plus three additional offices. The first floor annex would include a dining room. The second floor would include a reading room, library, twelve apartments, a school room, coat and hat room, men's water closet and women's lavatory. The second floor annex would hold a dormitory, a locker room, and a linen room. A mezzanine level was to provide two bathrooms with three bathtubs. The third and fourth floors would remain unfinished. The third floor would contain twelve rooms and the fourth floor was designed to have six rooms. The basement would include a play room, water closet (long urinal and nine toilets) laundry, lavatory with foot bath, shower room and plunge bath, hall, kitchen, pantry, furnace room, fuel storage room, and a water closet with two toilets. The basement annex would hold a bakery, fuel storage room, kitchen, pantry, storeroom, and the employee's laundry and lavatory. At its peak the Preston School of Industry encompassed 1, 000 acres, 750 of which were farmland. It housed 800 wards, employed a staff of 200, and utilized approximately 50 buildings. On June 13, 1894, the first wards were accepted at the Preston School of Industry, and the school was proclaimed officially opened on July 1, 1894. The next year, electricity was installed by way of a water wheel powered dynamo, called a Pelton Wheel, for incandescent and arc lights. The Preston School of Industry remained open until 1960 when new facilities for the school were completed. The building remained vacant and fading into disrepair until September 10, 2001 when The Preston Castle Foundation received a fifty-year lease for the property. The Preston Castle has also been named a California State Historical Landmark ( 867) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NPS-75000422. The Preston Castle Foundation received ownership of the Preston Castle and surrounding 12. 91 acres on November 7, 2014.

When you watch a paranormal television program, or maybe even one of the films that have come out that exploit Preston Castles history, you will find a common theme: Ghosts. This is because of the fact that it is documented that there were some people who died on the property over the many years that the school was in operation. So many times, when people re-tell history, the stories are told incorrectly, over embellished or just made up all together. Once these over-the-top ghost stories get started, well, its hard to stop it. I am not just talking about Preston Castle stuff either, this happens in all sorts of historic locations all over the world. This bothers me because I stick to the facts, and although I do believe that there is a spirit realm and that it does in fact exist, I choose not to go there with my work unless I have to. My primary purpose for sharing history with the world is to share an accurate telling of the past. And in turn by telling the truth, and shining a light on that truth by way of debunking the false stories and sharing the documented facts, I am honoring the very souls that have been lost to us in death. That is my gift to those who have passed on, to remember them – with respect and with accuracy. To be a voice for the voiceless, and honor the forgotten ones so they will be forgotten no more. Here is a list and summary of some of the deaths that have occurred at Preston Castle. This list is so that those who are truly seeking the facts about the souls who have lost their lives here can have accurate information in their quest for Preston Castles history. Natural Deaths At Preston To give you a list of all the deaths at Preston would be nearly impossible. Reason being is that so many of the records of the school have been purged over the years, and what is left at the State Archives do not reflect all of the wards who have walked through those castle doors. It is a known fact that there were deaths from the time the school opened until it closed (even the newer facility. The first death at the school that was due to illness or health related issues, was Adolf Antron who died on February 20, 1895, from Pulmonary Edema. The next boy who died that year was Grant Walker, which I will get into a little further in this blog. Both Adolf and Grant are buried out back behind the castle in the cemetery. (The Preston Cemetery is not accessible; it is on Cal-Fire property. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO VISIT. According to the Preston School of Industrys Biennial Report, dated August 1, 1896, the schools physician, A. L. Adams report states that given the conditions the boys were in when committed to the school, they were not surprised by the high rate of “hospital inmates” as he put it. In fact, he speaks of the entire facility having been exposed to some of the worst illnesses including incipient phthisis (known today as Tuberculosis) typhoid fever, scarlet fever, epidemic influenza, tonsillitis, malarial fever and pneumonia, as well as chronic illnesses such as epilepsy, chorea, and the regular fractures, bruises, abscesses and contusions. Another thing I would like to add is that even though there was an outbreak of the Spanish Influenza between 1918-1920, and despite the fact that half of the officers working there and a third of the wards committed there were affected by the virus, none of the infected died from the illness. In total, there are 18 boys buried in the Preston Cemetery. Of these 18 boys, 15 are ones that are listed as dying from illnesses. Williams (8/26/1879-6/6/1897) COD: Acute Meningitis Nicholas Hamilton (1/13/1878-5/17/1898) COD: Pulmonary Tuberculosis Frank Ward (unknown- 7/17/1898) COD: Paralytic Dementia Woolrich Leonard Wooldridge (5/23/1880-10/17/1899) COD: Acute Cerebral Meningitis Hugh Simms (6/4/1893-1912) COD: Tuberculosis Roy Scoville (9/14/1895-4/29/1913) COD: Meningitis Eddie Heath (7/19/1894-5/13/1913) COD: Myocarditis John Miller (8/13/1898-6/13/1913) COD: Meningitis Joseph Howe (10/20/1897-12/11/1913) COD: Tuberculosis Peter Miller (6/28/1897-1/20/1914) COD: Stroke of Apoplexy Benjamin Kealohi (5/13/1897-6/17/1915) COD: Acute Nephritis, Peritonitis, Appendicitis rupture. James Lopez (4/7/1903-12/23/1919) COD: Bronchial Pneumonia Raydell Holliday (1/31/1909-3/23/1922) COD: Influenza, Rheumatic Fever, Heart disease. The only reason we have such detailed information for the above boys listed is because of the fact they were buried on the property. Why were they buried there? Well, the school gave a certain allotment of time for next of kin to claim the body of the deceased so they could have funeral arrangements made elsewhere, but unfortunately many times the boys either had no family to notify or their family were destitute, meaning they had no financial means to recover their child to bury him properly. In that case, the school had the cemetery available to bury their unclaimed dead there, so they could rest in peace, properly. We know there were other illness related deaths at the school over the years, but since their families came to retrieve their remains, we do not have a complete list of all of them. Unnatural Deaths at or around Preston Castle When I say unnatural death, I mean that the death was either a homicide, accidental, suicide or questionable. Four of these listed are buried at the cemetery on the property. These are the deaths that I have found in my many years of researching this school. Wards: Grant Walker (died on June 17, 1895) Going back to Grant Walker, you will notice he is listed as one of the boys who died from illness on my first list above (typhoid fever. However, the 1896 Biennial report lists two deaths that year and one of the deaths was from accidental burns, intestinal ulceration. It is as if he ingested something toxic which burned his insides. Now, the only two deaths listed that year were Grant Walker and Adolf Antron, and Adolf's death is listed in the Biennial Report matching the description of the one with pulmonary edema. So how did Grant die? Did he have typhoid fever, or did he accidentally ingest something toxic? And if so, what did he ingest? That is a mystery to which we will never have the answers to. We can only speculate, and so, this is why I have listed him on both lists (Natural and Unnatural Deaths. Joseph Morgan (died July 1899) Shot after escaping the school, his wounds proved to be fatal. He was not killed on Preston property, but instead he died at Sheldon which is located near Elk Grove, California. Herman Huber (died October 17, 1911) At the time that staff was ringing the dinner bell, Herman and another friend, John Kirrane, attempted to escape the school in the dark. The night watchman J. D. French went after them. Although French claimed he only meant to shoot a warning shot to to sound the alarm so that the Superintendent would know something was happening, another ward, Ernest Reed, claimed that he watched French shoot Herman in cold blood. Tahema Vann (died on June 6, 1914) According to official reports, the boys from Company (I) went down to the pond to swim about twenty minutes after finishing their supper. Captain Enright told the boys that if they were not good swimmers, to stay at the shallow end of the pond. Tehama claimed that he could swim "dog fashion" just before he dove in head-first. The boys who witnesses the incident said that he came up once for air and raised his hand and arms in a panic, just before he went under and never surfaced again. Two boys, Robert Rains and Albert Rubidoux tried to dive in after him, to no avail. It wasn't until the next morning that they were able to retrieve his lifeless body that had sunk to the bottom of the pond. He is buried at the Preston Cemetery. Frank Cardarella (died February 12, 1917) On Valentine's day, Frank was found in his cell, dangling from a pipe above him. He had ripped his sleeping shirt into pieces, fashioning for himself a makeshift noose in which he used to commit suicide. He had been suffering from seizures due to epilepsy. Instead of the staff sending him to the infirmary to be treated, they took him back to his cell and left him there. Such a sad ending for a young man who just needed someone to care for him. Sam Goins (died April 19, 1919) After escaping the school, Sam made it all the way to the Thornton ranch, Northeast of Lodi. He threatened to kill anyone who attempted to apprehend him. J. E. Kelly, who had gone after Sam, shot aiming at Sam's leg to stop him. But at the same moment Sam was attempting to jump over the wire fence, he tripped. As he fell, the bullet hit him in the back and this wound proved to be fatal. The staff brought him back to Preston, where he lived a short time on the way up there. He admitted to the men who apprehended him that he knew he was at fault for the incident and therefore he exonerated Kelly from being responsible for his death. Frank Aljers (died May 13, 1922) Frank arrived at Preston on May 6, 1922. He had been in a motorcycle accident just prior to him being sentenced to Preston. His injuries were worse than they expected and when he arrived at Preston he went straight to the hospital at the school. He died a week later. Ray Baker (died July 26, 1924) While in an attempt to escape, Ray Baker attacked and tried to murder guard Thomas Dooley, by choking him. During the struggle, Dooley managed to get his pistol out and he shot Baker. The ward died 10 minutes after arriving at the hospital. Leland Price (died December 1924) During the middle of a Saturday night football game at Preston, a fight between wards Edgar Hough and Leland Price broke out. As a punishment the two were locked in the basement alone. The fight resumed, and at some point Price was knocked down or slipped, fracturing his skull on the concrete floor. He fell into a coma from which he never recovered. He died the following morning. William Reppert & Henry Herstein (died December 4, 1928) While digging a sewer ditch on the school property, six boys were buried alive when the trench the boys were digging in, caved in. Four of the boys were saved, but both William and Henry perished in the ground. Their bodies were recovered and Henry's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the school. Staff: Anna Corbin (died February 24, 1950) The most widely talked about murder that took place at Preston, is that of Anna Corbin's death. There is no way I can summarize her murder in one short paragraph as there is so much complexity to the case. The facts of the case was that she was found in the basement store room in a half-sitting position in the corner. Rugs had been placed in an attempt to hide the body. She had been choked and bludgeoned. Her cause of death was from skull fractures due to her head hitting the concrete floor of the basement. James Wieden (died December 5, 1965) On December 2, 1965, Preston's agricultural teacher James "Jim" Wieden was brutally attacked by two wards on the Preston property. After assaulting Wieden, they stole his vehicle and his wallet and escaped. They were eventually caught and tried as adults. Although the "Ghost Adventures" show tried to claim that the "agricultural teacher" was murdered at Preston, history proves that he was transferred to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on December 5, 1965. Non-Staff/Non-Ward Death: Fred Downs (died August 4, 1902) During my years of researching the Preston School of Industry's various history, I've come across many interesting stories. This particular story was about a man who met his fate at the Preston Reservoir, but he wasn't a staff member, nor was he a ward. In fact, Fred Downs was just a regular guy who happened to have been on a hunting trip with his two budd ies George Gorman and Ed Tibbitts when he met his fatal ending. The group of men were coming from Sutter Creek, but decided to hunt for doves near Mount Echo, just northeast of the reservoir. Nightfall was coming, so Fred made his last kill for the night, but the dove fell into the reservoir. Seeing that it was beyond his reach, he decided to go in after it and wanted to take a little swim as well. His friends claimed that he had only got chest deep in the water, wading normally when all of a sudden he went under. There was no sign of distress, no sound, nothing. In a panic his friend ran to the man attending the reservoir, Mr. Henderson, who arrived "within seconds. Fred's friends claimed they couldn't swim and that is why they didn't go in after him immediately, however given the amount of time between him going under and Mr. Henderson arriving it was said that it was nearly impossible for him to have drowned so fast. They pulled him out of the water, but he died on the banks of reservoir, before the doctor could reach him. They didn't know whether he drowned, collapsed in the water from heart failure or had some sort of heat stroke, but Fred Downs died suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, August 4th, 1902. He was well liked within the community of Sutter Creek, where he was raised. He was 34 years old, unmarried and it was said that "He was a great favorite with all who knew him, and his sudden and untimely death would be deplored by all. " Conclusion In ending, these are the forgotten ones of Preston's past that I strive so hard to protect and respect. There are several different accounts that testify for how the unfortunate head housekeeper Anna Corbin was murdered and found. One account states that she might have been killed in the kitchen, another that she was killed in the basement. There were other deaths due to tuberculosis or similar dreadful illnesses. Naturally, over the years people just kept telling different stories about this place often mixing reality and fantasy. Of course, none of this is officially confirmed and is rejected by family members and all of those that want to preserve Preston in a clean memory. All the child actors were local to the Sacramento area. The budget for this film was designated as Ultra Low Budget, so don't expect lots of high tech effects. For a lot of the cast and crew, this was one of their first motion picture experiences. For those who like horror movies without overt gore, this is a fun movie to watch.
