I bet those two are going to Area 51. A funny, action-packed spy comedy that will have parents laughing along with their kids. Overall A- Famous super-spy Lance Sterling is the world's greatest defender, until he unintentionally eats one of his gadget prototypes and turns into a pigeon. Now, it's up to the boy genius who made the gadget to help Lance find a way to stop the diabolical cybernetic villain Killian. But when he is framed for the theft of a prototype assassin drone, the only person he can turn to for help is Walter Beckett (Tom Holland. Walter is everything Lance isnt - awkward, gangly, short…and brilliant. Intrigued by Walters latest experimental concoction, Lance impulsively chugs it down, turning himself into a pigeon. Now the bird and the boy genius will have to work together to prevent the malicious (and subtly named) Killian (Ben Mendelsohn) from unleashing the assassin drone… This movie came as a pleasant surprise for me. After seeing the uninspiring trailer, I arrived at the theater pessimistically mulling over witty one-liners to use if the film turned out to be as bad as I feared. Much to my delight, my snarky comments turned out to be unnecessary. Spies in Disguise is good-hearted, funny, and well-paced. Color me shocked. Voice acting is critical in any animated feature and the leads really shine in this production. Will Smith is in his element with voice acting since hes so expressive to start with. Both his and Tom Hollands characters kind of look like the actors, but more importantly, the animators do such an excellent job in capturing their characters personalities that the characters feel like the actors. As usual, the most important factor in rating a comedy is its sense of humor. Spies in Disguise is a mixed bag in this department: the jokes are a bit flat, but the physical comedy is absolutely wonderful. Somehow, watching a line of half a dozen goons get whacked between the legs with a befuddled pigeon just doesnt get old. At least not for me, which leads me to think that I really havent matured much since eighth grade. Given my reference to slapstick pigeon-whacking, parents might be worried about the level of violence in this film. But they dont need to be unduly concerned. Although there are a lot of scenes involving cartoon violence and various perilous scenarios there is little else to worry about – unless youre thinking about bringing tiny tots who could be easily scared by the action. This film teaches kids that they should be kind even to people who havent been kind to them. And it encourages audiences to find non-violent solutions to problems. As Walter points out to Lance, “When you fight fire with fire, we all get burned. ” Parents with squabbling kids might find this message alone to be worth the price of the movie tickets. The other issue for parents is how adult-friendly this movie is going to be. If youre nervously considering spending 102 minutes in a dark room, bored out of your mind, with no socially acceptable excuse to grab your phone, you can take a deep breath. Spies in Disguise is fun for most adults and its short enough that even if you hate slapstick (which… on, whats not to love about a man getting yo-yoed into a concrete wall by a bunch of pink goo. you wont be in the theater long enough to get too aggravated by it. Its a win-win, right? As long as your kids dont start trying to catch pigeons outside, that is. Still, you win some, you lose some, your kids get bird flu some. Thats life. SPIES IN DISGUISE is an animated spy thriller about two very different men. Suave master spy Lance Sterling (voiced by  Will Smith) is known for not mussing his tuxedo while taking down international criminals, while awkward Walter Beckett ( Tom Holland) is a young, brilliant inventor who creates spy gear. When a mysterious terrorist is able to use tech to disguise himself as Agent Sterling while committing violent crimes, Lance turns to Walter for help and unexpectedly drinks a newly perfected serum that looks like water. But the invisibility concoction doesn't make Sterling disappear: Instead, it turns him into a pigeon. While in bird form, Lance must team up with Walter as his new/unlikely partner in order to take down the face-stealing mastermind. Is it any good? Smith and Holland have great buddy-comedy chemistry and give this weird-in-a-good-way animated adventure a charming, crowd-pleasing vibe. Blue Sky Animation has an impressive track record with animal-focused comedies (four Ice Age films and two Rio movies) and Spies in Disguise continues the studio's streak with the wacky twist of Smith's smooth-talking agent turning into a talking blue pigeon (complete with a tiny tuxedo bow-tie tattoo. Some of the humor may go over very young viewers' heads, but tweens will appreciate the pigeon anatomy jokes, as well as the dark, drone-obsessed adversary ( Ben Mendelsohn, who's quite comfortable playing villains and can sound quite chilling. Although the two leads work mostly as a duo, the talented supporting cast includes Reba McEntire as Sterling's unit director, Rashida Jones as an internal affairs investigator (who believes Sterling has turned traitor) and Karen Gillan and DJ Khaled as her well-intentioned but misguided team. The Mark Ronson-produced soundtrack prominently features Rob Base's "It Takes Two" for the Gen X parents. Rocket Fuel" by DJ Shadow and De La Soul, Fly" by Lucky Daye, and other high-energy tracks. But what really elevates this story is Walter's insistence on nonviolence (or at least nonlethal violence) creating gadgets and tech that focus on distracting and humanizing enemies with glitter-and-kitten bombs and other adorable innovations.
